Habitat for Humanity Announces New Project in Whisper Valley
Austin Habitat for Humanity is bringing a monumental affordable housing neighborhood to Whisper Valley. During a press conference on Wednesday, Oct. 9, Habitat announced the prestigious Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project will be coming to the Whisper Valley community in East Austin. This annual initiative, led by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, has been a cornerstone of Habitat for Humanity since 1984, bringing together volunteers from around the world to help build affordable homes and raise awareness of the global housing crisis.
Affordable Housing Neighborhood in Whisper Valley
The Carter Work Project will focus on building 25 homes in Whisper Valley over the course of one week in October 2025. The homes, ranging from 1,300-1,400 square feet, are projected to start at $230,000. With over 4,500 volunteers expected to participate, this ambitious effort will provide much-needed affordable housing to families in the area. As Austin’s housing prices continue to soar, initiatives like this offer hope for those struggling to find a place to call home.
Billy Whipple, Chief Impact Officer for Austin Habitat for Humanity, expressed the organization’s pride and gratitude at being selected for the project: “This is an incredible honor to have been chosen by Habitat for Humanity International and to carry on the legacy that the Carters have established for almost 40 years. And we get to do this during our 40th anniversary, which is so incredibly special to us.”
Whisper Valley, an innovative, eco-friendly master-planned community, has allocated 48 homes to Austin Habitat for Humanity’s first affordable housing neighborhood. Over time, Habitat hopes to build up to 700 affordable homes in the community, serving as Whisper Valley’s primary affordable housing provider.
“We are going from building 21 homes to 75 homes a year with support from our local community and corporate sponsors,” Whipple said. “As the median household income rises in Austin, the need for affordable housing is higher than ever, and we want to be the one-stop shop for affordable homeownership in Central Texas.”
