Texas Takes the Lead in Solar Energy

For the first time, Texas has surpassed California to claim the No. 1 spot for the most utility-scale solar capacity in the United States. As of Q2 2024, Texas added 1,656 megawatts (MW) of solar power, bringing its total to an impressive 21,932 MW, according to the American Clean Power Association’s “Clean Power Quarterly Market Report | Q2 2024.”

This growth reflects a broader trend across the U.S., where the solar industry continues to expand at a remarkable pace. The “U.S. Solar Market Insight Q3 2024” report from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie reveals that 9.4 gigawatts (GW) of new solar capacity were installed across the country in Q2 2024, largely driven by the utility-scale sector.

The report indicates a key factor behind this surge is the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which was enacted in 2022. Under the IRA, solar panel manufacturing capacity has skyrocketed to over 31 GW—a “nearly four-fold increase.” In just two years, the U.S. solar industry has added 75 GW of new capacity, contributing over 36% of all solar power ever installed in the country’s history. Nearly 1.5 million homes have adopted solar power since the IRA’s passage.

The SEIA predicts steady growth ahead, with annual solar installations expected to increase by 4% on average. By 2029, total U.S. solar capacity is projected to double, reaching 440 GW.
